Same Day Agra Tour by Car from Delhi
The journey of one day trip from Delhi to Agra follows the (rand Trunk Road, a royal route established by India's 1, gul emperors in the 16th and 11th centuries, when their capital alternated between Delhi, Agra, and Lahore (now in Pakistan). If you get an early start, you can see Agra's sights in one day: Turn off the Grand Trunk Road 10 km (6 mi) north of Agra to visit Akbar's Tomb, and then move on to itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, the Taj Mahal, and Agra Fort.
If you have allocated more time for this one day trip then there is plenty more to explore, several excursions from Agra make a trip here more interesting. Many find Akbar's deserted dream-city at Fatehpur Sikri as rewarding as the Taj Mahal. A short drive on from Fatehpur Sikri (toward Jaipur) brings you over the Rajasthan border to the Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, winter home of the Siberian crane. A separate trip takes you to the Mogul-influenced Hindu provincial capital at Gwalior. If you drive on to Khajuraho, Orccha makes an excellent place to spend the night amid ruined temples and palaces.
Under the Mogul emperor Akbar (1542-1605) and his successors, Jahangir and Shah Jahan, Agra flourished. After the reign of Shah Jahan's son Aurangzeb (1618-1707), however, and the gradual disintegration of their empire, the city passed from one invader to another before the British took charge early in the 19th century. The British, particularly Governor General Lord Curzon (in office 1898-1905), did much to halt and repair the damage inflicted on Agra's forts and palaces by raiders and vandals.
Agra today is crowded and dirty, and some of the Mogul buildings are irrevocably scarred. Other monuments, however, are strewn like pearls in ashes, evoking that glorious period in Indian history when Agra was the center of the Mogul empire, and the empire itself was the focus of political, cultural, and artistic evolution.
Same Day Taj Mahal Tour
If you arrive in Agra late in the day set out very early the next day. Hire a car and driver, and stop first to see the morning light on the Taj Mahal. Drive- from there to Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb and then to Akbar's Tomb. Return to Agra for a tour of Agra Fort or drive outside town to Fatehpur Sikri and Return to the Taj to see the marble at sunset.
Alternately, if you leave Delhi at 5 AM by car for a one day trip, you should reach Sikandra at 7:30, where you can see Akbar's Tomb in less than an hour. From there it's roughly 20 minutes' drive to Itmad-udDaulah's Tomb, an-other short but delightful visit; and from there it's a 30- to 45- minute drive to the Taj Mahal. You can then visit Agra Fort or Fatehpur Sikri in the afternoon and relax by the Taj at twilight.
