India gate is India's largest war memorial. It is a 42 meter high gateway located at Rajpath also known as the 'All India war Memorial' and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also designed the New Delhi city. Construction was completed in February 1921 as a memorial in honor of the 90,000 soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I.
The 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' or the 'flame of the immortal warrior' was added under the arch of the India Gate and has been burning under it since 1971. It is a memorial to the soldiers who valiantly sacrificed their lives during the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971. The India Gate demands attention and is hard to miss as you pass through the center of Delhi.

Humayun's tomb is a complex of buildings that was built as the Mughal Emperor Humayun's tomb. It was designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyath, a Persian architect and is believed to have been commissioned by Humayun's wife Hamida Banu Begum in 1562 CE. Humayan's tomb is famous for being the first garden- tomb on the Indian subcontinent. So remarkable was Humayuns tomb that its design was the inspiration for the breathtaking Taj Mahal in Agra. Formerly the bungalow of Raja Jai Singh of Jaipur it is now the largest and most popular Sikh temple in New Delhi. It is associated with Shri Guru Harkishan Sahibji, the 8th Sikh Guru, who was invited to stay with Raja Jai Singh on a summon to Delhi by the Mughal Emperor. During the Guru's stay with Raja Jai Singh it is said that he blessed the water in a nearby pond giving it healing qualities, hence making it sacred to the Sikhs. While he was there he served the poor and the needy of Delhi during a smallpox epidemic resulting in his contracting the illness and ultimately dying of it.

Long ago a canal ran through the middle of the street for water supply and because of the waters shimmering effects on the city Chandni got its name meaning 'moonlit'.
Take a rickshaw through the lanes and discover jewels, textiles, spices, kebabs and much much more. The best place in Delhi to haggle on anything and everything. You have not been to Delhi until you have walked through Chandni Chowk!

Raj Ghat is the celebrated memorial ground of Mahatma Gandhi who was known and admired as Father of the Nation. The black marble platform marks the spot of Gandhi's cremation on January 31, 1948. An eternal flame burns continuously in the copper urn at one end. It was built to reflect the simplicity of Gandhi's life, however has gone through many changes since it was first designed.

The Lal Qila otherwise called the Red Fort known for its massive red sandstone walls and architecture was constructed by the 5th Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in the 17th Century and stands as a powerful symbol of India's independence. The walls of the fort house many small beautiful buildings serving as meeting halls and a mosque. Moats surround most of the massive wall which in the past was fed water by the Yamuna river which runs alongside the Red Fort. Its grounds are large and expansive and make for a nice stroll around the complex. Once inside the fort walls you simply forget that just outside is the busiest most congested area of Delhi!
Red Fort was the last Fort to be built in Delhi.

The Qutab Minar was built in the early 13th century. The red sandstone tower of Qutab Minar is 72.5 m (5 stories) high and is famous for being the highest brick tower in the world. Containing 379 stairs to the top this red sandstone wonder has sustained earthquakes and time. Initiated by India's first Muslim ruler and completed some 200 years later by Firuz Shah Tughluq in 1386, when he uniquely completed the last 2 stories in white marble. The surrounding archaeological area, known as the Qutab complex, contains many monuments and ruins depicting over 800 years of Indian history.
